Notes: Inline AI Editing

Inline AI lets you edit, rewrite, and extend your text directly within the editor — without opening the side panel. Powered by Gemini via BlockNote's xl-ai extension, it works with slash commands and the formatting toolbar.

What is Inline AI?

Inline AI is a different feature from the AI Writing Assistant side panel (⌘J). While the side panel is for conversations and multi-step generation, Inline AI provides quick, single-action edits right where you're typing.

How to Trigger Inline AI

Slash Command

Type / on a new line and look for the AI section in the menu. Select an AI action to apply it to the current block or selection.

Formatting Toolbar Button

Select text to show the floating formatting toolbar. Click the AI button (sparkles icon) to open the inline AI action menu for the selection.

AI continues from where your cursor is, matching your tone and style.

Rewrite

Rewrites the selected text or current block with improved clarity.

Fix Grammar & Spelling

Corrects errors while preserving your meaning.

Make Shorter

Condenses the selected text into a more concise version.

Make Longer

Expands the selected text with more detail and examples.

Simplify Language

Reduces complexity and makes the text easier to read.

Change Tone

Adjusts the tone (formal, casual, professional, friendly).

Translate

Translates the selected text to another language.
