Live mirrors

A card can be a note.

A note card is not a screenshot of a document — it is the document. Double-click and it opens in the full Notes editor, with autosave, comments, and the AI panel. The board keeps a read-only preview that stays current on its own.

  • Create a note from the dock — it opens in the real editor, in its own tab
  • The board syncs the preview when you return, refocus, or the note changes
  • The card names its source, and one click takes you back to it
  • Deleting the card never touches the note

Before you open a board

Is this a mind-mapping tool?
Looser than that. Mind maps radiate from one center; a board has no center. Cards, labeled frames, and labeled connections can be a research wall, a moodboard, an argument map, a sprint plan — whatever shape the idea actually has.
Do canvas notes stay in sync with my real notes?
Yes. A note card is a real Theo Notes document — the card is a read-only preview that refreshes when you open the board, return to the tab, or the note changes. Double-click to edit in the full editor; deleting the card never touches the note.
What can I put on a board?
Notes, styled text, images, files with multi-page PDF previews, links that unfurl automatically, video and audio that play in place (YouTube included), and labeled frames that group any of it. Paste works for almost all of them.
What does Ask Theo actually do on a board?
It reads the whole board — cards, frames, connections — then applies changes: grouping cards into labeled frames, drawing connections, aligning and distributing, restyling text cards, even updating the note behind a mirror card. Everything it does lands in your undo history.
Can I get my board out of OpenCharts?
Six ways: JSON Canvas (.canvas — the open format Obsidian reads), Markdown, an Obsidian-style vault zip with every note as its own file, a standalone HTML page, raw JSON, or a PNG picture of the whole board.
Is the Note Canvas free?
It ships in beta on every plan, including free. Boards, cards, frames, connections, and exports are included; Ask Theo runs on the same AI credit allowance as the rest of OpenCharts.
